Mauritania 1: Pre-Service Training (2003) : Before one becomes a Peace Corps Volunteer, there is a mandatory period called Pre-Service Training, usually referred to as "PST." It is an arduous process, but a necessary one. We are living with host families, have very little privacy, and almost all of our time is accounted for with some sort of meetings or lessons. Most people agree that this is the most difficult part of the Peace Corps, and that if you can make it through PST everything else will become much easier. I concur.

Mauritania 2: Nouakchott reprieve! (2003) : Five of us who were going to be living and working in the capital were sent there for two weeks. It was a terrific means by which to get away from the heat of Kaédi. We were all placed with new host families during that time.

Mauritania 3: Model School (2003) : Model School was the most intense seventeen days of training. There were two classes in the morning and two in the afternoon every day of the week but Friday. I only taught two classes during that whole time because I was not going to be teaching in a public school. My involvement was limited to observing the other trainees, which was a difficult enough proposition in that the desks at which we were sitting were very uncomfortable, the classes were long and tedious, and it was very hot. There were discussion and critique sessions that went with each class.

Mauritania 11: Work (2003-2005) : For two years I worked at four different places: two agencies of the Ministry of Education, the teacher training institute, and the Nouakchott English Center. My second year I worked at the Islamic Institute. In addition to these jobs, I also did a lot of writing for the Peace Corps. In 2004, I put together a manual that was first used during training that year, the purpose of which was to teach the culture of Mauritania to the new trainees; I revised and added to the Cross-Culture Manual in 2005, just before I left. In addition to that, I edited the second version of the Peace Corps-produced Lesson Plans that Work, which is used by both Peace Corps Volunteers and Mauritanian English teachers.

In 1987, I spent two months in Japan; for one of those months, Ralph and I traveled together on Honshu and Hokkaido. He and his mom stayed there until he graduated from high school. He returned to the USA for his college education. The last time I saw him (before the wedding) was at his graduation from Cal State Humboldt in 2003, the month before I joined the Peace Corps.
